The Roots & Results® Framework
Stronger Leadership. Effective Instruction. Measurable Growth.
Roots & Results® empowers educational leaders to align instruction, intervention, and data-driven decision-making—creating stronger systems that lead to measurable student success.
Our Belief
Schools don’t need another initiative.
They need stronger instructional systems.
Theory of Action
When leaders align strong instruction, student data, targeted intervention, progress monitoring, and leadership follow-through, instructional coherence increases.
As instructional coherence increases:
- Teachers become more effective.
- Implementation improves.
- Student learning accelerates.
- Sustainable improvement becomes possible.
Roots & Results® Implementation Model
Discover → Design → Develop → Implement → Monitor → Sustain
Continuous improvement is not an event.
It is a cycle.
THE ROOTS & RESULTS® FRAMEWORK
Strong Roots. Lasting Results.™
Sustainable improvement does not begin with a new program. It begins by strengthening the instructional and organizational conditions that allow excellent teaching to take root, spread, and endure.
Assessment outcomes, achievement gaps, referrals, and intervention lists are the fruit of a deeper system. Roots & Results® helps leaders examine what sits beneath those outcomes: foundational skills, the quality and consistency of Tier 1 instruction, intervention design, leadership routines, teacher expertise, and school culture.
Student results are visible.
The systems producing
them are often hidden.
The Six Roots
The Six Roots help leaders examine the conditions beneath student outcomes and identify where greater alignment, capacity, or follow-through is needed.
Root 1: Foundational Literacy
Build the language, decoding, fluency, knowledge, and writing foundations students need to access increasingly complex learning.
- Universal screening and timely diagnostics
- Explicit, systematic instruction in foundational skills
- Oral language, knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing
- English and Spanish considerations when serving emergent bilingual students
Root 2: Tier I Instruction
Make high-quality, standards-aligned instruction clear, consistent, and accessible in every classroom.
- Clear grade-level expectations and aligned curriculum
- Consistent high-impact routines across classrooms
- Access, scaffolding, student thinking, and responsive instruction
- Use of assessment evidence to adjust core instruction
Root 3: MTSS & Intervention
Match support to student need without allowing intervention to replace strong Tier 1 instruction.
- Shared entry, placement, dosage, and exit criteria
- Evidence-based routines matched to diagnosed need
- Frequent progress monitoring and timely movement
- Fidelity checks that improve support rather than punish people
Root 4: Leadership Systems
Create the routines, roles, decisions, and follow-through that sustain implementation.
- Clear roles, decision rights, and communication
- Protected implementation and collaboration routines
- Useful walkthroughs, data reviews, and follow-up
- Resource alignment and barrier removal
Root 5: Teacher Expertise
Build knowledge and skill through relevant learning, coaching, practice, and feedback.
- Relevant professional learning tied to daily instruction
- Modeling, practice, observation, feedback, and coaching
- Shared knowledge of content, pedagogy, assessment, and learners
- Structures that recognize growth and spread effective practice
Root 6: School Culture
Develop shared beliefs, expectations, relationships, and habits that reinforce adult and student learning.
- Collective responsibility for every learner
- Psychological safety for adult learning and honest problem solving
- High expectations paired with practical support
- Routines that celebrate progress and sustain focus
Root Audit™ process
Listen and frame:
Clarify the problem of practice, goals, context, constraints, and current initiatives
Gather evidence:
Review data, schedules, curriculum, assessments, intervention plans, professional learning, walkthrough information, and stakeholder perspectives.
Find root causes:
Distinguish symptoms from system conditions and identify where inconsistency, misalignment, or capacity gaps are constraining results.
Prioritize:
Select a manageable number of high-leverage actions, owners, milestones, and measures.
Support implementation:
Provide tools, learning, coaching, monitoring, and adjustments as the work moves into practice.
What stronger roots make possible
Clearer instructional priorities, more consistent classroom practice, better-matched intervention, stronger teacher and leader confidence, faster response to student needs, and sustainable improvement.
